NBC SHARES GOVERNOR'S AWARD FOR JOINT NETWORK PRODUCTION AND BROADCAST OF "AMERICA: A TRIBUTE TO HEROES"

BURBANK, Calif. --- Sept. 22, 2002 --- In a surprise to industry pundits, NBC pulled off an upset over HBO's powerhouse "Six Feet Under" and buried the top-nominated drama series by winning 24 total Emmys including Outstanding Drama Series - "The West Wing" - and Outstanding Comedy Series - "Friends" - at Sunday night's 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast, telecast live on NBC from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. This is NBC's strongest Emmy performance since 1997.

"It was a great night on NBC and for NBC to have the best comedy and the best drama," said Jeff Zucker, President, NBC Entertainment. "Tonight's show is an affirmation of network television and a thrill for us. We're over the moon, especially for ŒFriends' and ŒThe West Wing,' and all our winners. I also could not be more pleased for Dick Ebersol, Randy Falco and Don Mischer for winning seven Emmys for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. And a special congratulations to Conan O'Brien for a fabulous job as this year's host."

"The West Wing"'s win is a three-peat for the critically acclaimed Wednesday night drama. A record-holder with the most Emmys won by any series, comedy or drama, in its debut year or in any single season, "The West Wing" has won Outstanding Drama Series every year it's been on the air. "The West Wing" also picked up Emmys for another three-time winner, Allison Janney, who previously was honored as Outstanding Supporting Actress and this year was named Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama Series. Three-time nominee, John Spencer, won his first Emmy as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Stockard Channing proved to be the hottest ticket in all acting categories, winning two in the same evening. She was honored as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work on "The West Wing" and as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for "The Matthew Shepard Story." Channing, a three-time nominee for "The West Wing" and an 11-time career nominee, has never won before.

In the comedy arena, "Friends," which has been nominated five times as Outstanding Comedy Series (1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002) won the coveted category along with Jennifer Aniston, a three-time nominee (two as Outstanding Supporting Actress and one as Outstanding Leading Actress), who picked up her first Emmy.

"Opening Ceremony Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games" walked away with nearly every Emmy for which it was nominated. With seven total Emmys, it emerged as the most honored program of the 2001-2002 Emmy Awards. The "Opening Ceremony" previously won six Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmys and was honored with Outstanding Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program for directors Ron De Moraes, Kenny Ortega and Bucky Gunts on Sunday night.

"Saturday Night Live," nominated an unprecedented 13 times in the writing category between 1977 and this year, picked up its second Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program. "SNL"'s other writing Emmy came in 1989.

NBC was also the recipient of an Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Governor's Award which was shared with ABC, CBS and Fox for the joint production and broadcast of "America: A Tribute to Heroes."
