- BURBANK, Calif. -- July 18, 2002 -- NBC, the all-time leading Emmy
winner
since the inception of the award, has entered its third decade of
nomination dominance by capturing 89 nominations in the 54th Annual
Primetime Emmy Awards to again lead all broadcast networks, it was
announced this morning by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences from
their North Hollywood, Calif. Headquarters.
"For 53 years, NBC has been the overall Emmy Award leader and we are
honored with today's nominations," said Jeff Zucker, President, NBC
Entertainment. "NBC's banner year last season was largely due to the
creative efforts of our classic primetime comedies and dramas as well as
our number-one late-night programs. It is gratifying to be surrounded by
such a phenomenal group of talented people who have helped NBC reach
the top-rated position in all dayparts. On behalf of Bob Wright, Andy
Lack
and everyone at NBC, I congratulate all the nominees and eagerly look
forward to NBC's exclusive broadcast of the primetime Emmys on
September 22."
Leading NBC's tally is two-time Outstanding Drama Series, "The West
Wing," which earned 22 nominations, an increase from the previous two
years in which the series scored 18 nominations each year. In addition
to
another nod for Outstanding Drama Series, "The West Wing" nearly
clean-swept all performer categories with nominations that include past
winners Allison Janney, Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford. "The West
Wing" was also nominated in the Outstanding Special Class Program
category for its documentary special.
The 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be televised live from the
Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium Sunday, Sept. 22 on NBC.
