'THE WEST WING' CONTINUES HOT SOPHMORE SEASON WITH ITS SECOND HIGHEST-RATED EPISODE TO DATE AND YEAR-TO-YEAR GROWTH OF 27 PERCENT IN ADULTS 18-49
SEASON PREMIERE OF 'LAW & ORDER' IS THE NIGHT'S TOP-RATED PROGRAM IN ADULTS 18-49
Led by the second highest-rated episode to date of the hit second-year drama THE WEST WING and the 11th season premiere of LAW & ORDER, which delivered one of its most dominant victories ever, NBC topped the Wednesday primetime standings in the demographics that are used to determine advertising rates.
Based on preliminary national viewing data from Nielsen Media Research that is subject to revision later this afternoon, NBC finished in a first-place tie with ABC in adults 18-49 by averaging a 5.4 rating and 15 share and scored an outright victory in adults 25-54 with a 6.8/17.
After being preempted by a presidential debate last week, THE WEST WING continued to score with Nielsen voters, who gave last night's episode the second-highest adult 18-49 (6.2/16) and third-highest total viewer (16.5 million persons) tallies in the Emmy-winning series' history.
Compared to its second episode last season, THE WEST WING's approval scores were up 27 percent among adults 18-49 and 21 percent in total viewers.
At 10 p.m., LAW & ORDER began its second decade on NBC by finishing as the highest-rated program on any network last night in adults 18-49 (7.4/21) and adults 25-54 (8.9/23).
In adults 18-49, LAW & ORDER posted one of its most dominant wins ever with a 2.6 rating point (54 percent) advantage over its closest competitor (the official series premiere of ABC's "Gideon's Crossing," 4.8/13) and was just a tenth of a rating point away from matching its combined ABC and CBS (the second hour of "For All Time," 2.7/7) competition.
LAW & ORDER also dominated the competition in total viewers by attracting an average of 17.8 million persons.
Please Note: NBC's schedule was not published by numerous program listing services yesterday following the early Wednesday-morning conclusion of the New York Yankees' come-from-behind victory in Game Six of the American League Championship Series.
